As many have read recently, we are taking a stab at standing stallions at our new Pennsylvania farm. In its infancy, the farm is still without usable barns although our fingers are crossed that they will be completed by February 1st. It will be cutting it close.

As for the brand new stallion station, we are attempting to break in with our first major purchase in the business when we bought Ponder in late 2006. A fantastically tough and durable race horse who won the Canadian Pacing Derby and set the world record at Delaware in 1:49.0. He has been just as tough and durable in the breeding shed. With limited crops, he has sired many top racehorses including the fast three year olds, Thinking Out Loud ($1,249,712; 1:47.4) and Bolt The Duer ($1,051,688; 1:47.4). Two colts from a crop of only 32 foals to go under 1:48. Yikes. Imagine what he would do with a full crop. Ponder stands for a reasonable amount ($4,000) compared to other stallions in PA (in fact its a 33% reduction from similar stallions).
Another interesting tidbit for those thinking of breeding to Ponder this coming year. Nine of his top 14 offspring are out of Cam Fella line mares (Bettors Delight, Cam Fella, Cams Card Shark, Camluck, Cambest, etc) and five of the top six. Anyone with a young correct Cams Card Shark mare should seriously think of breeding to Ponder.

A gorgeous horse and I believe a great opportunity for the small breeder.
